Emma Schad is a junior double majoring in communication and graphic design. She is a member of the Lakeland University tennis team. She comes from a family of five and lives in Sheboygan Falls. She decided to join The Mirror because she really enjoyed her time as editor-in-chief of her high school yearbook and has always had a passion for photography and journalism. Hannah Scherer, junior marketing major. As much as I dont like to admit it, athletics played a huge role in choosing Lakeland to further my education. Little did I realize that Lakeland had so much more to offer. By my second semester, I had parted ways with athletics because I was applying to be a RA, giving campus tours, pledging a sorority and trying to join other clubs as well. I wanted to be involved in as much as possible and fortunately for me, Lakeland gave me the opportunity to do that. Not only have I gotten opportunities outside of the classroom, but I am given so many tools to succeed inside the classroom. The professors at Lakeland are excellent and I owe my success to them because they are some of the most helpful, caring and intelligent people that I have ever been given the chance to meet. I am thankful to have these individuals watching over my academic experience. Lakeland has become much more than a school to me in the past two years. I came in as a freshman in Fall 2015 and I havent left since. I have spent both summers and portions of my holiday breaks on campus because Lakeland is my home now—this is where I met all of my friends who have turned into family. That is why Lakeland is home to me.

Nathaniel Cooper, senior business administration and computer science major. I am from Liberia, West Africa. As an African and a first-generation college student, studying in the United States has been both rewarding and challenging. I arrived at Lakeland University in January 2014 with the hope of earning a bachelor’s degree. I was optimistic and enthusiastic about learning and helping others. What I did not understand was that I was signing up to be homesick and to be away from friends and family for major holidays and events. I miss my family and friends—sometimes I just wish I could fly home for the weekend and then come back to school Sunday night. However, Lakeland has been a home away from home for me. I have met a lot of great people over the years and built relationships, and the support from everyone has been astonishing. I will be graduating in December 2017. I am excited and afraid at the same time, but I know God has a plan for me. I have come this far because of his grace and I am trusting him.

Karley Campbell, sophomore business major. As a first generation college student, the decision of where I wanted to attend felt especially overwhelming. I was a little skeptical of attending college this close to home because I wanted to feel more independent, which is why I chose to live on campus. Yet, I love it here and Ive been grateful for my family to be nearby. I started out my freshman year watching Forrest Gump with my roommate. By the end of the year, Netflix time transitioned into games of red ball at Muehl and adventures around town.
