Lakeland will soon celebrate seniors as they take one of the biggest leaps in their life and graduate. One of the many traditions with seniors are the decoration of graduation caps or mortarboard hats. Muskies in the past have adorned caps with decorations to commemorate their hard work and well-deserved diploma.

Emely Ortega, a graduating senior, who will be decorating her cap said, “I am decorating my cap firstly because it is a way to display the different things that have impacted your life and got you where you are today. We were also not allowed to decorate our caps in high school so it’s important to me to do so for college. I plan on incorporating the Mexico flag colors into my cap as well as honoring my brother in some manner so that he may “walk” across the stage with me in a way.”

Muskies should make sure that cap decorations lay flat, nothing vulgar or offensive, no mounted laser light shows or mortarboard propellors. Muskies can check out Sizzle.com for creative ideas on how to decorate their caps which can include paper, flowers, stickers, glitter and pictures. Decorating your grad cap is a great way to express yourself and show off your excitement to family, friends and peers who are cheering you on as you walk across the stage.

Lakeland Muskies will receive their diplomas on May 7, 2022 at 10 a.m. for the Kellet Graduate Commencement Ceremony, 1 p.m. for the Kellet Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony and 4 p.m. for the Traditional Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony.
