Danika Newberry, a junior psychology major with ventricular tachycardia, returned to Lakeland to tell her story and ask students to become organ donors in a special convocation.

The Pi Kappa Gamma sorority hosted the convocation on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Bradley Theatre. Kimberly Bahr, a representative of Donate Life Wisconsin, took the stage to inform students of how organ donation works.

Donate Life is a nonprofit organization for organ donation that operates all around the country. Students were able to sign themselves on as organ donors before and after the convocation.

The convocation came in the midst of the Dancing for Danika viral campaign started by the Pi Kappa Gamma sorority. Members of the Lakeland community were challenged to post videos of themselves dancing for organ donation awareness.

The viral campaign was acknowledged in the convocation’s conclusion, in which a compilation of the dance videos was played while Newberry and the Pi Kapps embraced onstage.
