Lunch and Learn discusses social media tips

The power of social media was the featured topic for the Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, Sept. 27, which was hosted by David Gallianetti, director of external relations.

The main message and focus of Gallianetti’s presentation was to “watch what you post” on social media. His point didn’t mean to not use social media or to avoid posting on it, but first “you need to be on social media,” said Gallianetti.

Second, you need to learn to build a “brand.”

Those who attended the lunch learned that “your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room,” a shared quote from Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.

Students also learned they should only post and like things on social media that they know will show potential employers their professional side.

“I have a friend that works in human resources that sits down with potential hires,” stated Gallianetti. “They sit and they go through that person’s social media, and if there is any content they wouldn’t feel right on the face of their company, they don’t get hired.”

This also relates to your friends’ list. “If you have friends that post content that you don’t like or that offend you or those you care for, you should purge your friend list” warned Gallianetti. “If a random person that follows you likes something of yours and you go ‘who is this,’ it’s a sign that it’s time for you to delete some friends.”
