Co-ed bathroom, shower rumors slide down drain
October 6, 2015
Rumors of an anticipated co-ed bathroom and shower arrangement in Grosshuesch hall have been circling the campus over the past few weeks. The speculation started when some students said the male residents should be able to use the female facilities rather than having to walk from their floor down to the lower level bathrooms to take a shower.
According to Grosshuesch hall director Michaela Wheeler, these rumors are false. The bathrooms and showers in the hall will remain the same, with both men and women having their own bathrooms and using their own showers. Although the hall may now be co-ed, the bathrooms will represent what they always have until further notice.

Don’t be afraid of gender neutral restrooms. They have been the norm in other countries for years. Really the privacy barrier just moves to the individual stall instead of the entire room. Just because something is different doesn’t make it bad. Keep the common wash wash area visible to public areas. The fear is that men will rape or abuse women. Most men just want to relieve themselves without offending anyone. The few men that are dangerous won’t be stopped by a little blue sign. It also means that other men will be around to protect women. If the restroom has urinals put them beyond the stalls. Using a urinal where someone can see you from the back side may seem odd at first but in reality no one is seeing anything they couldn’t see walking down the sidewalk. With some common sense planning they can work very well and save cost without any loss of privacy. Just a thought.
