A teacher’s guide to navigating the Digital Divide

Dr. Andrew Karls is teaching a course titled “Core III: Digital Divide,” which explores the difference between human consciousness and artificial intelligence. This course is scheduled to be offered annually in the fall semester.  

Critical Thinking about Long-Term Consequences: Students will learn to analyze and assess the potential long-term impacts of advancements in artificial intelligence on society, ethics, and human consciousness. Awareness of Rapid Technological Development: The course will provide students with insights into the rapid pace at which technology is evolving, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence, and how these developments shape our understanding of human consciousness. Understanding of AI’s Current Capabilities: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the current capabilities of artificial intelligence, including its ability to mimic human speech and interactions, and the implications of these advancements. Overall, the course equips students with the critical thinking skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complex intersection of human consciousness and artificial intelligence in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. 

The vision for Dr. Karls’s class, “Core III: Digital Divide,” is multifaceted and ambitious. It aims to. Recognize the Value of Conscious Experience: The course emphasizes the importance of understanding and valuing conscious experience, exploring its complexities and implications in the context of artificial intelligence. Integrate Various Disciplines: Students will delve into the diverse elements of philosophy, mathematics, art, psychology, biology, and computer science, providing a holistic perspective on the relationship between human consciousness and AI.
