From sickness and fatigue to anxiety and adjustment, medical and counseling providers in Lakeland University’s on-campus Wellness Center are here for it all. Counselors are available from 8 a.m to 5 p.m, Monday through Friday and medical providers are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Located in Brotz Hall, there are FREE services for both on campus and commuting Lakeland students.
It provides the feeling of a hometown medical and counseling service, small, but very personal. Medical providers are here to answer any questions, prescribe medication, and request labs if needed. Counselors are fully confidential and can set up weekly appointments or just anytime based on your needs and schedule.
Prices of medications are also on the cheaper side, ranging between $4 to $50. The Wellness Center offers over-the-counter medications for the flu, colds, rashes and a variety of other health concerns (photo below.) Prescription medications can also be given for respiratory infections, bacterial infections, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), anxiety and depression. Along with this, labs are greatly reduced to prices as low as $5 and physical exams are also free of charge.

Examples of medications vs their pricing are but not limited to: Amoxycillin 500mg $4.49, Sertraline 50mg $3.80 and Sumatriptan 100mg $5.35.
In an interview with Sheila Simons, a certified medical assistant and patient service representative in the Lakeland Wellness Center, she mentions specifics she can do for the Lakeland community. “I can help with finding the right place to go. If the providers are not here, I can send them in the right direction to get medical assistance when they need it. I can answer questions about what they should do if they have a symptom or a couple symptoms, and they don’t know if it’s something worth seeing. I also help determine whether or not they need medical attention or not. Oh, and I am also a phlebotomist, so I can draw blood, too.”

Simons lives in the heart of Howards Grove, Wis. and describes Lakeland as being in her “backyard,” which encouraged her to join the Wellness Center staff. She also mentions what a day in the center looks like for her. “During a typical day, when students come in, I check them in, but I sometimes have to build a new chart, which means I make one from scratch because they may not be from here. I room them, take vitals and let the nurse practitioner know what they’re here for. I’m there to assist in procedures, get medication, assist if there’s a charge, then make a follow up appointment if needed.”

It was so great to have Nailah come and get information for students that are not familiar with what the Wellness Center provides. This is a great resource that is provided for the Lakeland students. And it is free!
