If you like small town romance novels, Tayler Otten’s first book, Kindling Hearts, is a perfect read to start the summer.

Tayler Otten found inspiration for her new book, Kindling Hearts, during her studies in creative writing. Her enduring love for reading and writing, particularly within the romance genre, made her craft her own romance book. Otten will be holding a public reading on May 9 from 6:00-7:00p.m. at Chris & Sue’s in Plymouth.

Otten’s writing journey included constant self-doubt, and hours spent facing a blank screen before the words finally flowed. This process deepened her appreciation for the immense effort needed to create a full-length novel. Looking back on her time as a creative writing student, Otten valued the insight her university education provided into the entire publishing process, from writing to printing.

The most challenging part of writing the book involved extensive screen time, a lot of planning, communication with a graphic design student for layout, finding a local print shop, and organizing public readings. It required massive communication and coordination with various individuals.

For Otten, the most fulfilling aspect of the book was witnessing Haley and Cole’s journey to rekindle their love amidst personal challenges and evolving circumstances. The story follows Haley’s return to her family’s dairy farm in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, after a tragic event. Faced with past memories and a renewed connection with Cole, Haley confronts a crucial choice between her dreams in New York or rediscovering her roots in Sheboygan Falls to help her little brother after a car accident.

Upon completing the book, Otten experienced a sense of relief and accomplishment. She felt the weight lifted off her shoulders and took pride in entering a career she had always dreamed of. With aspirations to write more books, including sequels to Kindling Hearts, Otten encourages aspiring writing students to start early, generate ideas, and immerse themselves in the writing process. She emphasizes the importance of dedicating time and attention to each stage of creating a printed manuscript, which often involves collaboration with others like for cover design, layout, and printing.
