Student’s at Lakeland University’s main campus have the opportunity to study abroad in London, Japan, Germany, Luxembourg and Ireland. Students with at least one semester at Lakeland, have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, are not on academic probation and have at least one semester left, have the opportunity to participate in this program.

A study abroad experience may be costly, but Lakeland offers scholarships to help alleviate these costs. The Bhandari Family Travel Fund is a $1,000 scholarship for students with a minimum of a 3.6 GPA. The other scholarship is the Schaub Study Abroad Scholarship, which is offered to students with a minimum of three months study experience and a 2.5 minimum GPA. There are also other opportunities to earn scholarships through the different schools listed above and through study abroad organizations.

Steps to apply for an experience:

  1. Talk with your professors, family, and friends about your interest in the program.
  2. Fill out the interest form: https://lakeland.edu/student-experience/study-abroad– the study abroad coordinator (Mary Jo Jetzer) will reach out to you with further information after filling this out.
  3. Fill out a study abroad application given to you by the study abroad coordinator.
  4. Meet with the registrar’s office, financial aid office and study abroad coordinator to discuss costs and confirm that your courses are transferable.
  5. Meet with your academic advisor to make sure you are on track to graduate.
  6. Do your own independent research on the country and the program you would like to be in.
  7. Gather recommendation letters, transcripts and other paperwork requested to apply to your specific program.

The next steps that are needed to be able to study abroad are to apply for a passport and visa if needed, an international credit card and an international student identity card. Depending on where the experience is, students should also apply for a student Eurail Pass, Japan Rail Pass or any other popular mode of transportation. The final steps to the process are to go to the doctor, book a flight, purchase medical insurance, purchase travel insurance and start packing.
