Lakeland offers many extracurricular activities that many students dedicate their time to while attending college. Many participate in sports, Greek life, and clubs, such as the creative writing club. The writing club is a space for anyone who enjoys writing and it also provides a judgment-free zone which allows students to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and creative innovations.

Megan Hunt, creator of the club, added “It’s a very relaxed environment. We often do writing prompts and help each other with writing assignments when necessary.”

Hunt also went on to add that all students of any major are welcome to join because it allows them to branch out of their comfort zone and excel as a writer. It’s a great way to get in touch with the ideas brewing inside one’s head and to flourish when writing it into a page.

“My favorite memory with the club so far is when we collaborate on one single story. We have one person write down our ideas and we all just say our ideas for the story. It’s a lot of fun, but can be a bit chaotic.” Hunt said.

The club meets every other week on Thursdays at 11am. The main genre they focus on is fiction. However, Hunt made clear that it is not limited to only fiction. Students are more than welcome to try any genre of their choice like nonfiction, poetry, prose, or anything else that they feel they want to share or explore. Hunt also added that some meetings involve peer help with assignments that writers struggle with or are struggling with. It helps students gain ideas on what they can write on current or future assignments.

When asked if writers get weekly assignments, Hunt said, “One of my main concerns is making sure the writing club remains fun and stress free. I don’t send out any assignments because I know everyone is busy and I don’t want the club to feel like an extra class. However, if people miss a meeting and want me to send them writing prompts to try on their own, I am willing to do that.”

Many students know little to nothing about a lot of these clubs that exist here on campus. This is just one of the many clubs that students can get involved with to expand their horizons and to break out of their comfort zones.
