With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the profound influence mothers and women have in our lives, particularly within our university community. Mothers play an indispensable role in shaping the lives of students, serving as pillars of support, guidance and inspiration. In celebrating the importance of mothers and women, let’s take a moment to acknowledge their invaluable contributions to our community.
Mothers play a monumental role in the lives of students. They serve as both outlets for students and guides as they navigate through various chapters of their academic and personal journeys. From providing emotional support to imparting valuable life lessons, mothers prepare their children before they leave the nest, ensuring they are equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead.
Students can show appreciation for their mothers in various ways:
- Expressing Gratitude: A simple “thank you” and acknowledging their mother’s support and sacrifices can mean a lot.
- Spending Quality Time Together: Setting aside time for activities or just a simple conversation can be incredibly meaningful.
- Showing Affection: Hugs, kisses, and kind gestures can convey love and appreciation.
- Helping Out: Assisting with household chores or tasks without being asked demonstrates genuine appreciation and consideration.
The Pi Kappa Gamma sorority hosted an annual event called “Mother and Daughter.” This event aimed to express gratitude to our moms and remind them that even when we are away from home, they are always in our hearts.
At Lakeland University, we recognize the significant impact of mothers and women in our community. Some ideas our Muskie community should consider in the future:
- A Mother Appreciation Wall: A public exhibit on campus where students can leave messages, letters, or notes for their moms or other significant women in their lives, highlighting the profound influence they have on the town of Lakeland.
- A Women Leadership Panel: An insightful panel discussion featuring successful female alumni, faculty members, or community leaders who share their experiences and insights on leadership, empowerment, and the importance of women’s roles in society.
Mother’s Day has a rich history going back to Anna Jarvis, who advocated for a day to honor the immense sacrifices made by mothers on behalf of their offspring. After her mother passed away in 1905, she worked tirelessly to establish the Mother’s Day custom, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and appreciating maternal figures.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, let’s cherish the special bond we share with our mothers and honor the profound influence they have in shaping our lives.
