On February 24, Lakeland University celebrated Black History Month alongside the Sheboygan community during the Essence of the Arts event at the Weill Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Sheboygan.
Expanding from the annual Essence of Heritage, this year’s event featured a collaborative community celebration, a talent showcase and an educational wax museum showcase.
Florence Siebert, Director of Mission and Equity, spoke on the significance of this month.
“The observation of Black History Month on the university campus is an important reminder for the community. The month not only celebrates the substantial contributions of Black Americans throughout American history, but it also highlights how much Black Americans have been underrepresented in the story of how America has been shaped.”
Siebert looks forward to expanding Lakeland’s Black History Month programming in the future.
“I would also like to see more holistic programming that connects students’ study to Black History and present-day folks who continue to shape our community, state, and country for the better. With this in mind, the hope is that not only will the community gain an understanding of black history but use this to build a greater understanding of why it is celebrated throughout the Nation,” stated Siebert
