Julie Mavity-Maddelena is the Lakeland university Chaplain as well as a professor of philosophy and director of Ulrich Center which focuses on equity and inclusion at the school. A role that she takes very seriously having come from a religious family herself. Growing up in the United Church of Christ she was taught and teaches the lesson that religion is about love.
Ironically, she did not start life here as a chaplain but as an assistant coach for the women’s tennis team. Becoming chaplain only after a few years and the retirement of the previous chaplain. When asked further about her background, however, she does admit that religion has been used to cause damage. After a pause she says that Jesus included everyone, outcasts of all kinds so we should do the same. Later on, with a smile she states that her favorite aspect of working here is the different types of students she interacts with every day.
Lastly, she implores students to come to her office. Someone who’ll listen, spiritual advice and snacks are all waiting for those who do. Even leaving a piece of advice for all the readers of the Mirror and beyond: Keep Listening.
