Once again it was the youth of Lakeland’s wrestling program that led the team at the Concordia University of Wisconsin Open on Sunday, Nov. 17. Freshmen Wesley Colton and Marcus McCauley and Sophomore Jeremy Kroeger all made runs in the wrestle-back bracket at the event.
Score was not kept as the tournament was an open, but over 400 wrestlers competed in the event.
Colton led the way at 174 lbs, winning three matches in a row after losing his first. Colton achieved his first two wins by way of decision before securing his third by forfeit. He was then defeated by decision in a match against Bryan Leven of Wartburg, who was ranked eighth in the weight class.
McCauley also fell in his opener before winning two straight matches, one by fall and the other by decision. He then fell to Greg Vance of Loras College in the 141 lb weight class.
Jeremy Kroeger also won two matches in his wrestle-back bracket in the heavy weight class, both by decision before losing by fall.
Sophomore Matt Weber also won two matches on the day, winning his first match and then losing the second. Weber came back and defeated Robbie Kerr of UW-Platteville at 157 lbs by fall before losing his last match.
Sophomore Jacob Maechtle was the eighth seed at 149 lbs, winning his opener before losing his second match by fall and forfeiting his third.
Sophomore Eduardo Orihuela (133 lbs) and Freshman Eddie Terres (184 lbs) each went 1-2 on the day.
The Muskies return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invitational in Milwaukee.
