The Lakeland College Women’s Softball team defeated Mount Mary College in both games in a double header played in Howards Grove on Apr. 3.
Junior pitcher Erin Henk threw four innings, allowing two hits, and one run for the Muskies in game one, a 13-1 victory. The win improved her record to 5-3 on the season. Freshman Amanda Graves threw one inning to close out the game.
“We played good and hit the ball well,” Henk said. “We can’t take teams like that lightly and we played the game we knew how to play.”
Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Zimmerman got the start in game two and pitched one and one-third innings to get the win in game two, a final score of 17-1. The win improved her record to 2-3 on the season. Henk pitched one and two-thirds innings and Graves pitched two innings to close out the game.
Offensively for the Muskies, sophomore Sammy Rieder and junior Heather Haeflinger led the way. Rieder went 5-5 with four runs scored, six RBI’s, three walks, a double, a stolen base and a homerun on the day.
“I just followed our offensive team goals of putting the ball into play,” Rieder said. “I just waited for my pitch to hit.”
Haeflinger went 4-7 with five runs scored, two RBI’s, a stolen base, a double, and a triple on the day.
“I knew I had to put the ball in play and that helped me focus and fix things I’ve been struggling on with batting,” Haeflinger said. “It was also important to show that we couldn’t take Mount Mary lightly and had to play our game.”
With the sweep the Muskies are now 7-7 overall and 2-0 in NAC play.
The Muskies will resume action on Apr. 5 at home in a double header against Maranantha Baptist Bible College. Game one will begin at 3:00 p.m.
