The Lakeland College Women’s Basketball team won their seventh straight game on Feb. 9 by beating Maranantha Baptist Bible College 60-54.
Lakeland fell behind by eight points early in the first half and battled to get back into the game. A layup by junior Becky Mayo with 28 seconds left in the first half tied the game at 26 points going into halftime.
In the second half, Lakeland came out and took the lead and increased it to as many as ten points.
“We started out slow but continued to fight and showed moments of really good team basketball,” Mayo said. “It was a tough road game that we needed to win. We made some great defensive stops and converted on their turnovers. We could have done a better job rebounding, though, because their second chance opportunities kept them in the game late.”
The Muskie defense forced Maranantha into committing 21 turnovers and held them to 32% shooting in the game.
Mayo led the Muskies in scoring with 12 points and senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm added eleven.
With the win the Muskies improve to 16-6 overall and 11-5 in NAC play. The Muskies will resume action on Feb. 11 at home against Marian University. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
