How Mexican Independence Week Brings the Community Together
- From the aroma of traditional Mexican recipes filling the air in the Campus Center, to the meaningful conversations about Mexican heritage, the event gave a sense of community. A.L.A.S Opens their arms for people from all backgrounds to come together, learn, and connect. By sharing the stories of the past, it builds a stronger, and more inclusive campus.
Highlights from Mexican Independence Week on Campus
Mexican Independence Week started Sep. 16 through Sep. 19 at Lakeland university featured a series of engaging and delicious events:
Monday: We kicked off the week with a bake sale featuring traditional Mexican sweets like conchas, bizcochitos, and tres leches cake.
Tuesday: A mouth-watering Mexican corn sale drew a crowd as students enjoyed this amazing street food.
Wednesday:Chorizo tacos were a hit, offering a savory taste of Mexican cuisine.
Thursday: Chicken tinga tostadas marinated in chipotle sauce capped off the week, showcasing yet another flavorful dish.
How Can Other Students and Faculty Participate?
Participation is encouraged from everyone on campus, regardless of background or prior knowledge of Mexican history. Students and faculty can attend the cultural events, volunteer, or simply join any event. Faculty members can also incorporate lessons on Mexican history or culture into their curriculum too.
What Does Mexican Independence Mean to the Students at Lakeland?
For many students, especially those of Mexican descent, Mexican Independence Week is a time to reflect on their heritage and share their culture with the people on campus. Students involved in organizing the events expressed a deep sense of pride in their heritage, emphasizing that this week allows them to celebrate their heritage while educating others about their history.
Alondra Reyes, a member of A.L.A.S, shared , “This week gives me a chance to honor my family’s struggles and show my peers that the hopes and dreams that my parents had came to life.It also allows me to invite others to understand the importance of our independence and have them try out new foods.”
How You Can Get Involved?
Mexican Independence Week is an open invitation to the entire Lakeland community. Students and faculty can show their support by attending the food sales and events throughout the week. Faculty members can further contribute by offering leadership opportunities or encouraging participation, ensuring that the celebration becomes a campus experience that includes everyone, regardless of where they come from. The goal is to build bridges, not just within the Hispanic community but across the student body, making everyone feel welcome and included. Looking Ahead: What’s Next?
As Mexican Independence Week wraps celebrating Hispanic culture during Hispanic Heritage Month. Upcoming highlights include food and salsa contests, as well as larger cultural celebrations such as Día de los Muertos and Posadas.
