Students learn through LEAP
March 1, 2016
LEAP (Lakelanders Excelling At Professionalism) is an interactive training program led by staff, faculty and students.
The LEAP program is required for all student employees, but all students are encouraged to attend. The program focuses its attention on the importance of Lakeland’s service obligations: to show respect, to communicate well and to be positive.
This training is intended to create a culture of impeccable service at Lakeland by continuously raising standards to the next level.
Mara Jenson, manager of student employment, welcomed all in attendance on Sunday, Feb. 28, by introducing student employees to LEAP by guiding their focus towards service at Lakeland and the goals for our campus.
Meg Albrinck, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, Karin Miofsky, assistant professor of criminal justice, Pete Barth, manager of communications, and Charlie Krebs, associate professor of theatre and speech also came together to share their knowledge and help spearhead the LEAP training.
Email etiquette, interpersonal communication and professionalism in the workplace were common themes introduced to over 50 Lakelanders. A generous lunch was provided along with candy prizes for those brave enough to participate in group discussions.
The training incorporated a couple group activities, multiple discussions and even a live role playing scenario that was judged by none-other than Musko, himself.
Staying positive was a major take away for all student employees.
College is hard and work makes it a lot harder. As a student employee it is important to remember you are an ambassador for Lakeland College, leaving lasting impressions on everyone with whom you interact. Students should learn to stay positive when serving their community and to remember, they are providing a service.
The next LEAP training session, split into two meetings, will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m., both in the Wehr Multipurpose Room.
