Despite the dreary weather, spring break is finally just around the corner; however, before students leave campus, there are usually several large assignments and exams to finish up. To help students ease their minds and prepare for break, Lakeland’s health and counseling services teamed up with Phi Delta Omega to host the Relaxation Vacation event.
The Relaxation Vacation is an event where students participate in a number of stress-reducing services that are brought to campus. Students were able to visit a chiropractor, receive massages and partake in yoga lessons with an instructor. Other activities included crafts, meditation and reflexology to help relieve tension. The event was led by health professionals who provided key advice and information, so students learned first-hand the importance of having low stress and anxiety levels.
Dawn Walvort, a health professional from Aurora Health Care, brought aromatherapy essential oils and shared tips on how to use them.
Additionally, she provided information on how to make healthy food choices.
“We want them to recognize the nutritional facts, so they can make healthy choices,” Walvort said.
Cary Knier, director of counseling services and campus counselor, explained the benefits of the event.
“Students are able to be exposed to different services and different techniques to reduce stress,” Knier said. “This is a great event because students can utilize these services without cost on campus.”
Campus Nurse Sherry Carstens said, “[Relaxation Vacation] helps to set the mood for spring break and allows students to relieve stress from mid-terms. This is [the health and counseling services’] fourth year doing this event and students really take away great information.”
