On Saturday, Jan. 21, students and faculty from Lakeland College, Lakeshore Technical College, and UW-Sheboygan gathered to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at five different locations throughout Sheboygan.
The Above and Beyond Children’s Museum, the Wisconsin Naval Ship Association, Bookworm Gardens, Spaceport Sheboygan, and the John Michael Kohler Art Center were the businesses that received aide. Vice President of Student Development Nate Dehne, Professor of Sociology and Non-Profit Management Don Francis, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Ronald Haas, and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Heather Molle were part of the event as well, acting as site leaders at four of the five volunteer sites.
Lakeland students Lindsay Abler, Karissa Anderson, Vanessa Cook, Jennifer Kjin, Veronika Lau, Latoya Morgan, Marcelius Reed, Skye Sieglaff, Dontay Strong, and Braden Woods all participated in this event, which began with registration in the Bradley and ended with lunch and a trio of speakers in Bossard Hall.
Faculty members Dr. Rick Dodgson, assistant professor of History, and Offenhiser Associate Professor of History and Political Science Dr. Richard Wixon spoke of Dr. King and his legacy, along with Jose Araugo, the Sheboygan AmeriCorps director.
The event was arranged by Rachel Rupnik from the Volunteer Center of Sheboygan and Collin Steller, Lakeland’s community service coordinator. It is their hope that this will become an annual event.
