After finishing high school, Joey Lehto, hall director of Muehlmeier Hall, dreamed of playing football at the next level just like some his best friends who played at Division 1 colleges. His dream became a reality when he was given the opportunity to play at Lakeland College, which he describes as “a home away from home.”

Lehto knew that he wanted to pursue a profession in the sports field, which is why he chose to major in exercise science and sports studies. According to Lehto, he knew the personal touch that Lakeland offers to students, staff and faculty would help him on the path to his college degree.

While a student at Lakeland, he was also the starting fullback for two seasons despite injuries. In February 2013, he was named “Fighting Muskie of the Year” due to his unwavering dedication.

Now that he has accomplished that goal, he is pursuing a Master of Arts in Counseling at Lakeland College while simultaneously working at the institution.

“I will do anything in the college atmosphere if coaching does not work out for me, such as admissions or career counseling or anything like that,” said Lehto. “I like to be with students, and I like to pass my knowledge and skills on to college students.”

As a junior and senior, Lehto was a residence assistant in Friedli Hall. When he graduated in 2013, he stayed in the area coaching at Lakeland and attending school. He was then contacted by Jim Bajczyk, director of residence life, and asked if he would like to apply for the position of hall director in Muehlmeier Hall. Lehto accepted the opportunity and went through the interview process before ultimately receiving the job.

“I had a lot of relationships built with the players that I coached, so that made it an easier transition and they were able to show me the ropes as well,” said Lehto.

In addition to being a hall director, he is the linebackers coach for the Muskies football team. He also coached Romain Johnson II and Fred Fielding, both of whom were all-conference linebackers at the end of last season. According to Lehto, he takes great pride in these achievements and has great expectations for both of them next season.

From residence assistant to hall director and player to coach, Lehto keeps coming back to Lakeland.
