Lakeland has hosted many art exhibitions over the years, and art enthusiasts always gather to enjoy creations by Lakeland students. As exciting and memorable as senior art exhibitions may be, they are usually spaced far apart, and followers of art are unable to get their fixes. That is, unless they venture down to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in downtown Sheboygan. The center has been a cornerstone for area arts since 1967, and it was expanded in 2000.
The center offers many opportunities for young people to learn through the “lens of creativity.” There are events and activities geared toward students age three through college level. According to the center’s website, jmkac.org, “School group tour activities are designed to deepen the experience of art, foster creativity and nurture skills to engage with art independently.”
These events include guided writing activities, art-making workshops and guided exhibition tours. They help students develop a connection to the world of art. The art center also offers performances of dance, music and theatre.
The Kohler Arts Center is an ideal place for Lakeland students who love the arts. It is a colorful place that will infuse one’s creative practices with knowledge and instruction, and it might inspire the creation of a piece that one day may be featured in the arts center itself.
The arts center has specific tour dates, but if anyone having a boring day may simply drop in and enjoy new artwork. Remember, art doesn’t always have to be featured on television for you to enjoy it.
Upcoming events and activities can be found on the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s website: www.jmkac.org.
