Is there no Wi-Fi signal in your room or anywhere in your dormitory? Don’t blame Lakeland College—blame some of your fellow students. They have routers.
Routers, also known as rogue access points according to Lakeland’s IT department, disrupt the Lakeland Wi-Fi signal already established on campus. They are not allowed, yet students still seem set on buying them.
“They’re all over campus, so it’s really hard to pinpoint a location and try to fix the problem,” said Travis Richards, network administrator of the IT department. “In the meantime, spread the word that they are not allowed, or if you know who has the router, tell them to turn it off.”
On a high note, a wireless project is in the works in which the IT department will be able to turn off rogue access points and make them useless. This is a part of the many upgrades to come by the end of this fiscal year. Those interested can track the progression of this project on the IT help desk page, which can be found on my.lakeland.edu.
The IT department stresses that students should first tell their resident assistant about a prohibited router or any type of technical problem, and then if not fixed, call IT directly for assistance.
