Support has never been a problem for Lakeland fans. On a basketball game day, some students regularly come dressed in outfits meant to perturb the other team so that the Muskies can have a greater chance at winning. Recently, Lakeland intensified that for the semifinal men’s basketball game against Edgewood. Lakeland had a silent night theme to go along with the game, and most students wore their best pajamas.
A Silent Night basketball game is when the students are quiet until the home team scores over a certain amount of points. For the Lakeland crowd, it was 10 points. When the Muskies hit that mark, their fans became extremely loud.
The bucket that put the Muskies over 10 points was a three pointer. For those fans not paying attention, it certainly made them focus on the game. The opposing fans looked shocked because Lakeland students had not cheered up to that point. Lakeland is the smallest team in the conference, but after that 10th point, they were the loudest.
The fans were comical in their support of the home team. Some interacted with the referees. Some fans even pestered the other players from the opposing team.
The pajamas, some extremely distracting and revealing, were all accepted. Some guys wore fake afros and some even donned jackets with little clothing underneath them.
Even though Lakeland lost the game, students supported the home team to the fullest extent and went to supreme lengths. The Muskies and their fans will surely come back even harder next year for Silent Night!
