The Black Student Union (BSU) is hosting several events for Black History Month during February.

The first event that BSU hosted this month was the Minority Discussion Panel on Feb. 12.

The Minority Discussion Panel featured Lakeland students answering questions and discussing their experiences. This included how their transition to the U.S. went, what it is like in their home country and the differences between foods.

The students who participated were Shunya Lida and Yu Nuagai from Japan, Karen Lerindo and Emma Dika from Kenya, Nathaniel Cooper from Liberia and Meribeth Mazzi from Peru.

According to Corey Roberson, student success and engagement coach, the event received positive feedback.

BSU also cosponsored Ray Wood Jr., the comedian who came for Funny February on Feb. 17. There will be a soul food night on Feb. 22 with Lakeland College chef Jessie Falls helping to prepare the meal.

Another event that BSU is preparing for is Essence of Heritage on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Bradley Theatre. This event gives African-American students a chance to show their heritage to the campus.

Student performances include poetry readings, motivational speakers and comedic skits. Alpha Psi Alpha and Beta Sigma Omega will be performing their own step shows, which is dancers stepping and clapping to a beat.

Josh Landon, a news anchor at CBS 58 Milwaukee, will be the guest speaker for the event. The event will be a convocation credit for students.
