On Feb. 28, Lakeland College Campus Activities Board (LC-CAB) invited Lakeland students to see the Kimberly-Clark Broadway Across America production of Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton.
With tickets at the outstandingly low price of $25 for Lakeland students, fans of the musical rejoiced. The group agreed that the event was worth every penny spent.
“I loved it [the musical]; I saw it when I was in sixth grade, so it’s been a while, but it was still amazing,” said Taylor Levitt.
A spin-off of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good Witch. The musical follows the green-skinned star Elphaba, who was played by Alison Luff, from birth to college and through the events which eventually label her “wicked.” The play introduces the spoiled, rich Glinda, who was portrayed by Gina Beck, and the local prince and heartthrob Fiyero, played by Nick Adams.
“My favorite character would have to be Elphaba, just because of the way that they characterized her so evil in The Wizard of Oz, but they put everything together, and it made sense in Wicked. It was awesome! I loved it!” stated Christian Jaskulski.
As Elphaba fights injustice and tries to undo mistakes of the past, dark secrets and calamities shape the history of Oz, paying reverence to the classic Wizard of Oz story while simultaneously changing fans’ understanding of it forever. The musical is a tale about love, friendship and trust, while revealing that there are two sides to every story.
The Lakeland group took two busses to Appleton where the show was being performed. Even though the group was seated high up in the nose-bleed section, everyone enjoyed the experience.
“I thought the play was very well done. I’ve seen it before in Chicago, and I thought it was just the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Tim VanDoorn.
The audience was brought to tears throughout the musical by the outstanding performance by the entire cast.
“The musical was amazing,” said Alissa Lawrenz. “My favorite scene is obviously the end of the first act where Elphaba and Glinda sing ‘Defying Gravity.’ I was just blown away.”
