Lakeland College theater students will be performing the play, “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller, and the cast is already putting its own personal touch on the classic.

“The cast has contributed tremendous new ideas for staging, and they have been inventing dozens of powerful [character] moments to bring the story to life,” said Charlie Krebs, associate professor of theatre and speech.

“They [the audience members] will get to experience ‘The Crucible’ like never before,” said Brooke Bignell, freshman undecided major. “It is a dark play, but there is so much more to it than that.”

Bignell will play Abigail, who is the female lead. In the story, Abigail is a provocative and manipulative adolescent who dabbles in witchcraft but pins the blame on everyone else.

Although Bignell has been acting since she was 5 years old, she still finds the role challenging.

“Abigail is nothing like [me],” Bignell said. “That makes her hard to play, but I am enjoying the challenge. I like getting to push myself past what I know I can do.”

Krebs is excited for the student body to witness the unique story this fall.

“It is one of the greatest American plays of the last hundred years because of the writing, the story, the characters and especially the themes,” Krebs said.

“The Crucible” will take place on Nov. 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Bradley Fine Arts Building.
